Lots of things have two sides. Daylight and darkness, divorces, criminal trials and politicians are just a few. Accepting the bad with the good can often be the key to a successful life and retaining your sanity. Preparation for exploiting the good in business and successfully dealing with the downside plays a major role in business success. Just as in any business, there are pros and cons of franchising.
Look Carefully At Both Sides
Early on, both the pros and cons of franchising must be examined equally. The lure of success can be intoxicating. Many give too much credence to the pluses before realizing Continue reading

Ready to run your own business and be your own boss? A Canadian franchise opportunity may be just the ticket to success. Franchises are ready-made opportunities for the person who is ready to jump into their own business. On the other hand, change that “jump” to “get”. Jumping into anything — especially a franchise — is the wrong way to go about it. Know what you want, find out all you can and ponder the decision. Getting into something is always easier than getting out. Do some homework on both you and the franchise.
A franchise business model is based on leveraging another company’s proven processes, systems, technology, in operating the business — essentially becoming the franchisor’s strategic partner by following their model and duplicating their success in your region.
Finding a good franchise is a little like buying eggs at your local store or market. All of them may look okay but how do you know they are? Are they fresh? How long have they been there? Some may hide inedible contents or reward you with double yolks. You’re hungry but you either need to avoid mystery eggs — or move on to eggs you know more about. How to select a franchise is, in a way, a similar situation.
Life can often be a trade off. Take a vehicle for instance. Getting good gas mileage with a small car is a plus. But there are times when keeping up with a herd of SUV’s can be a challenge. That tiny, perfume-like spray of fuel going into your engine can cause problems as you try to blend into traffic off a freeway ramp. Accelerating quickly from a traffic light can also be a problem. The driver behind you may be seen in the rear view mirror moving his or her mouth. They probably aren’t singing along with Lady Gaga — especially if they seem in a hurry. There are advantages and disadvantages of a franchise business that can often make an owner’s mouth move in the same manner.
Clint Eastwood movies have usually produced memorable lines. The 1973 film, Magnum Force, was no exception. In a scene where the character, Harry Callahan (aka, Dirty Harry), is verbally sparring with his boss, Lieutenant Briggs, the lieutenant states that he, unlike Harry, has never taken his gun out of its holster. Harry fires back with: “You’re a good man, lieutenant. A good man always knows his limitations.” An intelligent prospect looking at franchises to buy also has to know about limitations — of themselves and the franchise.
Getting into a franchise business is, for the most part, just like getting into any other business. The great thing about a franchise is that it’s proven; you know it works. Other businesses starting from scratch can be more of a gamble. In a franchise business, you can examine the history of the company, determine how well it has worked in some areas and not so well in others. You can research failures and generally get to the root cause of why a franchisee may have failed.
